Bristol 170 Superfreighter Mk32 – c/n 13251

With CAB/BUAF/BAF from Feb 1959 to Mar 1971

Given Name – ‘Valiant’

During her first two years working for CAB, G-ANVR would continue to carry out car ferry services and the occasional freighting task to and from Southend. Indeed, it was one of the latter trips that saw VR bringing in two Hiller helicopters from Rotterdam on March 11th 1960, namely G-APNR and G-APOF, both of which arrived somewhat snugly contained within her hold. With her transferral to BUAF in January 1963, along with the previous addition of three Carvairs into the fleet, VR would start to undertake a lot more in the way of cargo work and as a result of this, Victor Romeo was spotted at a good number of airports around the UK including Cambridge on May 13th and Leeds-Bradford on August 27th.

In fact, this work would continue until January 18th 1965 when VR was removed from BUAF service and then summarily dispatched to Manston on lease to Air Ferry where she would temporarily be restored to the car ferry role, hauling vehicles and passengers to Le Touquet, although a few of these flights would be operated to Ostend and Rotterdam too. Sadly though, these routes would not meet with success and by the end of March she was back with BUAF freighting once more. One trip of interest would see VR transporting the experimental Rover BRM gas turbine car from Elmdon to Clermont Ferrand on June 25th. However, come August she had been sent to Lydd permanently where once again she would resume her ferry roll for BUAF and then BAF, becoming something of a stalwart on these services up until her sale to MAC in 1971.
