Air Kruise

Air Kruise

Operated from c.Jun 1946 to Oct 1957

Main Bases – Lympne, Ramsgate and Lydd

Founder/Director – Wing Comm Hugh Kennard

Air Kruise Ltd was a small airline which operated independent charters to the Continent and local pleasure flights, initially out of Lympne Airfield in Kent from 1946 until its demise in October 1957. Started by Wing Commander Hugh Kennard, it began services with a single Miles Messenger aircraft. The airline eventually moved to Lydd and then on to Ramsgate by 1953, from where the airline operated to Le Touquet and Ostend. In the same year it was taken over by British Air Services who made Wing Commander Kennard one of the three directors of the group. From time to time, Air Kruise aircraft would turn up at Southend on ad-hoc passenger charters and the company would also use B.K.S. for engineering work.

The Air Kruise name would continue as the passenger wing of Silver City Airways which was also part of the BAS Group of Companies. By January 1957, Air Kruise was still operating eight aircraft under its own banner although this would only last for another 10 months when in October 1957, this airline was finally absorbed into Silver City and the name disappeared altogether. Nevertheless, Wing Commander Kennard would remain as a director at Silver City until the end of 1960 when he resigned to devote more time to other concerns, one of which was his engineering company ‘Aircraft Engineering and Maintenance Ltd’. In 1961, he went on to start the airline Air Ferry Ltd which also on occasion ventured into Southend.
